In a bid to support the local government’s Kalinga sa Kalikasan program, Atimonan One Energy, Inc. (A1E) teamed up with Atimonan’s Municipal Environment and Natural Resources (MENRO) for a mangrove planting and coastal cleanup activity along the coast of Brgy. Balogohin last September 28 to 29.
About 5,000 mangrove propagules were planted along a 400-square-meter area along the shoreline. Around 50 volunteers from Delta Earthmoving, Inc., Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection, Atimonan Emergency Response Team, Rotaract-Interact Rotary Club of Atimonan, and Bantay Dagat joined the activity.
The planted mangroves will not only help protect shorelines from damaging storms, waves and floods, but will likewise maintain water quality and clarity by filtering pollutants and trapping sediments coming from land.
Prior to the mangrove planting, a coastal clean-up was also done at the mangrove forest where 50 sacks of waste were collected.
This collaborative project between A1E and the MENRO aims to undertake viable environmental interventions that will help in maintaining environmental integrity and restore biodiversity in Atimonan.
Prior to this activity, some 1,000 mangroves species were already planted at the same plantation site. More activities are planned to ensure sustainability of this undertaking, according to MENRO Environmental Enforcer Ma. Haidee Hulleza.
“We plan to make it as a continuous activity in the future,” she noted.
For its part, A1E remains steadfast in its commitment to contribute to environmental preservation and ensures that its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs will serve as a catalyst for positive change in the communities.
A1E is the developer of a 1,200- megawatt (MW) high efficiency, low emission (HELE) coal-fired power plant in Atimonan, Quezon Province. It is a subsidiary of MERALCO PowerGen Corporation (MGen), the power generation arm of Manila Electric Co. (MERALCO).
